Part Two - Arrival, Unpacking and
Mock-Up Oct 2000
 Today
the crate from South Africa with my 101 basket case arrived and between the
driver, James and myself, we lugged it down off the truck...Ah Christmas
had came early this year...we were like little boys with big crowbars!
Off with the lids and we were in amongst it, up to our elbows in Indian
parts...for both of us true bliss as James is also restoring one of his two 101
baskets to compliment his '44 Chief.
It wasn't long before everything was hauled out of the crate
ready for scrutiny by my three year old apprentice Emily. (The cream auto in the
background is my 1955 Lincoln
2dr Custom Sports Coupe, which I drive almost daily during summer
months).

Everything looked in order at first glance... then,.. wait a minute the front
wheel was a 20" clincher to which a complete repop hub and stainless spokes were
attached. ...hmmm that has to go! ( it was anyway with me going for the drop
center wheels instead)
During the quick inspection I found the engine cases were perfect, the bottom
felt smooth and strong, the timing gear and lifters in very good condition but
the oil pump gear (in pump) badly worn.
The helical primary excellent (as they are always, never seem to wear). The
sheet metal was sound and straight with some metal finishing required and braces
needing manufacture. The tool box is off something unknown and there is no
battery box. The magneto was a Bosch ZEV and with a quick resetting of the
points it managed a respectable spark at the first spin of the wrist.
 An
hour or so later I had thrown it quickly together and loosely bolted up for a
mock up at which time James discovered the left hand top-most footboard mount
broken off, pissed me off a little even though easily repaired. The rear wheel
you see is off a 741 but I have the correct hub and rim. There is a slight kink
or two in the bars which should straighten.
Well that about does it for Part 2, the next part (whenever that may be!)
will be getting the frame and forks in order. Fortunately the frame is
mint but for the broken lug and the forks the same with just re-bushing of
bellcranks required and 42 x 1/4" ball bearings for the steering head races
required. The steering head stem threads, which can be an issue, were also good.

Incidentally, this is my 'other' 101, (complete with broken
frame in two places)
from which I will be switching the engine cases, rear fender, rear cylinder and
head and gearbox over to this one.
